According to our literature "Vastu" means "Vasathi" or "Vaasa" which means living under one roof. This word was later changed to Vastu and in some areas it is also spelled as "Vastu" or "Vaastu" or "Vasthu" or "Vasthu" as many people do not follow an expert advice and this leads to many versions with a similar meaning resulting in confusions and overlapping of ideas.



There are several rushes out of which Vastu shastra was born. The following are familiar :


Manasara Shilpa Shastra (by Manasara)

Mayamatam (by Maya),

Viswakarma Vaastushastra (by Viswakarma),

Samarangana Sutradara (by Raja Bhoja),


Treaties such as Agni Purana and some works by Kautilya and Sukracharya are not popular even though they preceded the previously mentioned documents due to some reason or another. There is a wide distinction of style in existence due to each document's place of origin.



Mayamata and Mansara Silpa Shastra are considered Dravidian because their origin is traced to the south of India whereas Viswaskarama Vaastu Shastra is considered Aryan due to its north Indian origin. Out of all the above Viswakarma Vastu shastra is comparatively familiar.



Vaastu shastra in fact, is a very old science. Its knowledge enables us to reap benefits of mental peace, health, wealth and make our lives happy. This science, after propounding the rules of construction, goes to prove that by properly constructing our buildings, villages, towns, cities, shops, offices, factories and industries, we can make ourselves prosperous. Our ancient sages created vaastu shastra for the welfare of entire humanity.
